The flow of saliva in the mouth helps clean the mouth of food particles and other debris. In addition, saliva neutralizes cavity-causing acids in the mouth.

In order to gain the full benefits of chewing gum, make sure that you choose a sugar-free type. Although gum with sugar will still help with saliva flow, the sugars are used by plaque to produce cavity-causing acids.

When choosing chewing gum, look for the ADA Seal to ensure that the gum is not only sugar free, but sweetened with sweeteners that don’t cause cavities.

Chewing gum can supplement your dental hygiene. Never let chewing sugarless gum replace oral hygiene practices like brushing and flossing. Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once every day.
